The Janet Aiko Sekiguchi Foundation

Honoring Janet's legacy by investing in communities and causes consistent with her passions and her struggles.

ABOUT Us

The Janet Aiko Sekiguchi Foundation was started in 2005 by a group of Janet's college friends as a memorial to her person and her legacy . She was passionate about justice, education, Jesus, and her friends. Thoughtful, artistic, funny, and loyal, Janet impacted many people in her life as a friend and as an educator. Tragically, after suffering from mental health issues for many years, she took her own life in 2002 at the age of 25. The Janet Aiko Sekiguchi Foundation honors Janet's legacy by investing in communities and causes consistent with these passions and struggles.

Board Members Foundation board members currently include Valerie Chu, Judson Bouchard, David Hong, Kim Hsu, Thomas Lee, Mark Paredes, Sal Sanchez and Andrew Wong. We are grateful that Judson, Kim and Thomas joined the board in the spring of 2021. They have reenergized and inspired us to refresh our mission and our approach to remembering Janet.

Since shortly after its start, the Foundation has supported individual educators and Christian ministry workers serving in urban environments. Starting in 2022, our new approach is to partner with schools in historically marginalized communities to support innovative educator- and student-initiated programs that promote intellectual growth, racial & social justice, community development, and mental health. We believe we can make a bigger impact in communities and better support grassroots innovation by partnering with school communities in underserved neighborhoods to provide up to $10,000 per year to fund one or more teacher- and student-initiated projects to grow and serve those communities.
